Introduction

Imposter, a 2D platformer adventure game unveils the mind of a gifted child wrestling with imposter syndrome. Imposter challenges players to overcome self-doubt and inward fear metaphorically through storytelling and game mechanics. By encountering a series of obstacles and enemies symbolising fear, doubt and anxiety, players are nudged to set out on a path of self-discovery and empowerment.

Interestingly, this project was done during the finale of GameUp Africa, aside we wanted to finish and perhaps win. Our goal was to create an experience that resonates with players, highlighting the struggles and possible triumphs that can stem from facing one's fears. We collated a series of art styles that we loved and were inspired by using Pinterest then we later settled for a muted, semi-monochromatic colour theme, and an overall minimalistic look and feel. We designed the levels such that they are progressively difficult for a good play experience. Some of the main elements of Imposter are the narrative, the way in which obstacles and adversaries are interpreted metaphorically or symbolically, the use of checkpoints to preserve progress, and the way in which the story is advanced through cutscenes and dialogue that are activated by in-game activities.

Keytakeaway:

Through this project, I further learned the benefits and profound impact of effective collaboration and communication. Individual skill sets are great, however the synergy of a team drives a project to success. Being there for each other and having different perspectives on a particular concept or idea are great benefits of working in a team. Indeed teamwork makes dreams work.

The journey of working on Imposter was not without challenges but through it all we did it. It was our first published work, we won third place for the best game in the bootcamp, I got nominated for the best male participant, my partner won the best cell lead, and the challenges and seemingly scepticism turned into excitement by the accolades we had and more importantly and quite fulfilling is that our idea became a reality.

Role / Responsibilities:

My role was user interface, visual designer and artist. I worked on the initial concept and background art using Photoshop. I used Figma and Adobe Illustrator for the UI and visual design. For the designs, I first sketched them on paper and later developed them digitally.
